A perfect hike to kick off this series! Balsam Lake Mt. has a sweeping 360 degree view from the fire tower, atop its summit. There is nothing better than nature taking your breath away at the end of your journey to the summit. This is a view you will remember!
Hunter Mt. is the second tallest peak in all of the Catskills. Yet it has the highest 360 degree view in the Catskills, with its fire tower. The hike up the old carriage road provides a wonderful variety of scenery, and an easy pace. This is rewarded nicely with sweeping views from the Shawangunks, to the Berkshires, and beyond.
Perched on the northern edge of the Pine Hill west Branch trail, Balsam Mt. affords spectacular views towards the legendary mountains of the Central & Northern Catskills. As you work your way deep into the hollow to reach the foot of the mountain, one might easily have the feeling of being enveloped by wilderness.
Windham High peak is one of my favorite hikes. Those who make the effort to hike to the summit are treated to views beyond the northern edge of the Catskills, as well as views of the awe inspiring Blackhead Range.
This peak stands out in the crowd, and on the map! Formed unlike the rest of the Catskill peaks, Panther Mt. is the result of a meteor strike. This unique origin has literally shaped the land, and waterways around the mountain, leaving those that venture to its slopes rewarded with a sense of the powerful forces at play in nature.
While the summit affords the hiker little reward in the form of a view. The journey to get there, is spectacular this time of year. Painted with a brilliant array of colors, that change as we progress through a variety of differing forests. This is the kind of hike that will make you appreciate the forest for the trees!
October 13th, The Blackhead Range
